17 Year Old Murdered In Logan Square Club

BUMPED (orginal date of post is 10/15/09):
Apparently, the shooting never stops in Logan Square. Yet another shooting has occurred. The latest one occurred at the V Live Club, 2047 North Milwaukee at about 2:00am this morning. A 17 year old boy was shot to death in this club after an alleged argument with another guy when that guy pulled out a handgun and shot him. The boy was indentifed by the Cook County Medical Examier as Ramiro Guevara. According to police, there were over 2000 people in this club when the incident occurred. They were paying $30 to get in. People under 21 were allowed in, but the workers allegedly gave those under age wristbands that did NOT allow them to drink. Source/Read more.

I've got questions about this:
1) Why the hell was a 17 yr old boy allowed in a club like V Live?
2) Why is the boy out after curfew? On a school night, no less? At 2 this morning, I was sleeping for 6 hours.
3) Why did V Live allow minors into the club?
4) I know the article says that 2487 people are allowed into V Live, but why were there 2000 people in one room like that? On a Wednesday night/Thursday (early) morning? Doesn't anybody who was there have a job in the morning? I understand that some people don't work in the mornings, but seriously, at least a few people there had/have to.
5) Why was the murderer allowed to bring a gun into the club? Don't they have security where you get patted down? I went to my school's homecoming dance last Friday night and I was searched head to toe by CPD, but yet a nightclub can't search the people who come in there?

I'm sorry to offend the owners (if they're reading), but this club needs to be closed down, immediately. Why did the local residents within that area allow this club to open up in the first place?

I encourage everyone who lives near the club to complain to the police about this club and make some sort of petition to get the place shut down. It'll ruin your good time, but so what? It'd be safer than sorry.

Comments or questions? Please share them here or email them to me. I'd like to get a discussion going here.

Update, 10/21/09: Apparently, more happened at V Live Club this night than thought. An updated news article reports that there was a beating outside of the club. It is NOT related to the shooting, according to Chicago Police. Four males were arrested and charged with Battery.

Hey, anoynmous 5:23, I'm only going by what this article wrote and what the media's been saying. Blame them for any misleading facts. All I did is ask questions, which in my opinion are true. Can you answer any of them?

I agree, anonymous 6:43.

I agree with the blogger, this club is a nuisance. Read some of the articles: the 17 yr old had $800 cash in his pocket.

Gangbanger? Upright citizen?

If you go looking for trouble, it will definitely find you. With 2000+ people in the club, I'm sure there were a couple witnesses...

I agree, anonymous 4:56. Trouble will find you if you look for it, especially in a club with over 2000people in it. I just hope the vitcim wasn't looking for any trouble. Quite honestly, I'm not sure what to think because I wasn't there and I'm only going by news reports.

I am sorry for the vitcim's family loss and his girlfriend's though, just to clear things up.

I strongly agree that this place should be closed down for good and start building condos. As far as I can remember there was a club before VLive and wasn't there a similar stituation there before where someone got shot? Correct me if am wrong. But why would people living in that area did not protest about a club before it was opened but people did protest about Megamall. Do you remeber that? I don't understand protest against a mall but not a club?

ALSCB, I am a big fan of your blog, and very grateful for the service you provide to the community. That being said however, the angry and conservative tone as well as the lack of sensitivity in some of your recent entries has surprised me.

In particular, I have a number of issues with this most recent post. Lots of people like to go out on Thursday nights, even if they do have to work the next day. I fail to see why you would get angry at them for this. Further, many minors like to go out at night, and feel little need to obey the often irrational restrictions placed on them by our conservative society. I myself am a law school graduate, but frequently skipped classes or entire days of high school, usually with my parents endorsement. As for why minors were allowed in the club, I think you need to look at it from a more culturally sensitive point of view. The clientele of V-Live, are for the most part Latino. This means that for them, our taboos against socializing with younger people, and our ban on drinking under 21, are largely alien practices.

As for your comments about the gun, yes, it would be nice if they had provided slightly better security but I have two responses for you: first, I'm willing to bet that the owners and organizers didn't expect anyone to be so foolish as to actually use a gun to shoot someone inside the club. Second, trying to keep guns out of peoples hands is largely futile. In the rougher neighborhoods of Chicago I can assure you that a much greater percentage of people than you would expect carry them, no doubt including many of the people you go to school with.

As for your suggestion that we close the club down, this seems absurd to me. That club and the attached restaurant are some of the few run away success stories on any stretch of Milwaukee west of Damen, and we need to encourage MORE business of that kind if we want to develop the property values along our street to the level where we can actually begin to drive down the crime levels.

Once again, thank you for your service to the community, and I hope we can continue to have more discussions like this in the future.

Anonymous 8:12, there was a club there before V Live. That was closed. I'm not sure if there was a situation where someone got shot.

I remember the Mega Mall protest. And you're right, a club could cause more stuff than Mega Mall did.

Jabarkas, first off let me say that I'm glad you're a fan of the blog.

The anger comes from not only the lack of concern alot of people in this neighborhood show for crime, it's also because of all the idiots in the area who commit these stupid crimes. And there's been more incidents near me as of late, so I think I do have the right to get angry about this stuff.

I am aware people like to go out on Thursday nights. That's good. But, minors shouldn't do that. At 2 in the morning at least. They should be at home. I also think they should obey laws/the curfew like everyone else.

If minors really feel the need to go out to clubs, there should be separate clubs for them. At least I see it that way.

I didn't get to finish repling to you, Jabarkas, but now I can.

Anyway, I can agree about security not excepting it. However, in this city, you have to except the unexcepted, in my opinion.

I know alot of people carry guns in the rougher neighborhoods. When I was on my way to the 911 center as a part of a field trip last month, we passed up a guy who had a gun in his hand walking down Homan. I'm also sure that I go to school with some who carry guns.

I only said the club should be shut down because of the circumstances that happened here. They allowed minors in a club on a school night (I would've had no problem with it if they were kicked out at 10pm), they served liquor with minors present, they packed 2000 people in one room (which presents a real major issue of crowd control once the club closes). I could go on and on but I won't.

The club may be good, but letting 2000 people into one place like that is not good. Or letting minors in with liquor being served. I don't care if there were wristbands, it shouldn't have happened anyway. Trust me, I'd like to have more clubs, restrauants, etc. along Milwaukee to start driving down crime levels but if they're going to do this, I think it'll just pull in more crime.

I've been getting reports of street fights that break out after V Live lets out with groups of people. This is why I've been down V Live's throat. They should try to break up these incidents such as breaking up people who start arguing in the club. I also think that more (if there's not already) police may be needed to watch people disperse out of the club.

Thank you for taking the time out to read and comment.

I recieved a comment from an anonymous coward (no offense to most of you, though) who says I need to get my facts straight, that nobody died in this shooting and that the kid wasn't a gang member.

I'm not sure what I did with the comment, but I'll address it. First off, like I said, if you people would read, I am ONLY REPORTING WHAT THE MEDIA IS SAYING. This is not reporting by me. I personally have no clue what happened on that night. I'm only reporting the kid died because the media did. If you can prove that he's not dead with some real evidence, I will tell my readers that he is alive and well. Third, I NEVER said he was a gangbanger. If he was, it wouldn't make no difference to this situation, except that it was a gang-related argument and that there will be retailation for this later on.

Like I said, READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE YOU ACCUSE ME OF BEING AN IDIOT AND NOT HAVING MY FACTS STRAIGHT. I'm only going by news reports and do not have actual witness to this or anything.
