Beat 2523 CAPS Meeting This Evening (9-22-10)

Good evening, everyone. The meeting this month had, I hate to say, pretty poor attendance. I was excepting more people. So, moving on to the old issues from August:

Old problems:
* Ken-Well Park - There has been gang loitering and drug dealing in the park. CAPS Sergeant Tim Weiglein says that the District Park car, Beat 2505 on the radios, has been paying special attention to the park.

Before I move on to the new problems, I'd like to let you all know that search warrants were done in the 4100 block of W Barry and the 3100 block of N Monticello, according to Sgt. Weiglein. At these search warrants, large amount of drugs were found. Also, I received word that there was an attack on the 2900 block of N Kostner last night around 9:45pm. A teenage boy was on his way home from night school, when a male came out of nowhere and "savagely" attacked this boy. I heard that the boy was injuried in the attack. No word on his condition.

And now to the new problems:

New problems:
* Barry/Harding/Springfield - There is a problem with parking in this general area. There is also gang loitering in the area, particulary by the ASPIRA school on Barry.
* On Belmont, there is shady activity going on. This shady activity includes gang members loitering, and them asking kids who go to a nearby school if they want drugs.
* Your's truly brought up a concern a reader shared with me regarding 2933 N. Avers, with trespassers. I also brought up a building that is a problem on the corner of George and Ridgeway.

Other observations:
> This was one of the greatest meetings I've ever been to. I was given a "Community Service Award" (see picture). It was presented to me by Sgt. Weiglein. The whole room clapped and I thought I heard a cheer or two. It felt great to get an award, especially what I do to try to keep all of you safe in the community. This work I do isn't for me to get praise and glory for myself. It's for all of you, to make sure every single person has a safe community that we can be proud of.
> The most incidents took place in the 2900 block of N Lawndale. The most crimes were criminal damage (18 reported incidents), theft (15 reported incidents) and motor vehicle theft (14 reported incidents). The most incidents took place on Saturdays and Thursdays. Most incidents took place on the street (32 reported incidents) and in apartments (20 reported incidents). The most incidents took place in the 1pm, 8pm and 10pm hours.

As I do in every Beat meeting post, I extend my thanks to all for being involved in this meeting. We are making progress for sure, I think, but work still needs to be done. Further more, I am very thankful to be welcomed at the meetings by everyone. Once again, I ask for those residents who read the blog but don't come to the meetings (because they don't want to), please, come! It only takes ONE hour of your time, and we need all of the help we can get.

Thank you,
Timmy

Fire On Washtenaw

Good morning, everyone, it's 5am. This is the first full day of no more anonymous comments on this blog. Once again, I apologize to all of you well meaners out there, but I'm not going to let a certain idiot comment to where I get depressed. I don't need depression right now. I have so much going on in my life as it is. Anyway, I'm monitoring 14 this morning for all of you. With that, here's crime before I leave this morning.

I'm really fucking sick of that person's comments, and with this, he'll no longer be able to comment. I don't need this shit. I've got enough things going on in my life right now to be breaking down in depression or anything. If you don't want to sign up for an account, but want me to see your comments, email me. My email is on my profile.

Shooting On Monticello Friday Night

Hey, everyone. I am going to share this information with all of you in regards to a shooting that occurred at 10:39pm on Friday night. This incident transpired in the 3200 block of N. Monticello Avenue, according to this Chicago Breaking News article. The 17th District Police Officers responded to calls for "Shots Fired" to hear that a 29 yr old man had been shot in the chest. I guess the police didn't find him at first, as the victim's friends took him to Our Lady of Resurrection Hospital, but they did find him once he was transferred to Illinois Masonic.

All I can really say is, wow. Another shooting. It's sad. And it's even more sadder than Alderman Colon has yet to address the gang violence along Belmont from Central Park to Ridgeway. Yes, I think this is gang related. It has to be. Look where it happened at. Well, in the long run, all I can do is suggest that those of you living there make your voice heard. Go to CAPS meetings, call 911 as often as you have to, form a block club. Get involved in the community. Doing just that can make things a whole lot better. I'm a living witness to that.

2:51pm - The 11:38/2:12/2:34 and 2:35pm jobs are ALL related. This is some kind of on-going dispute between two groups. The gunshots from Dickens and Hamlin at 2:12 where in retaliation from the car trying to run over people from the 11:38 incident. It sounds like the guy who suffered the cuts to his hand was an innocent bystander who got caught in the crossfire.

4:59pm - Traffic accident. Milwaukee and Avers.

6:37pm - Shots Fired. Kelvyn Park.

Drunk Attacks CAPS Member On Hamlin

Hello, everyone. I have a serious crime in which I need to report to all of you. This involves a local drunk on Milwaukee Avenue, who took it upon himself to viciously attack a CAPS member this morning in the Avondale community. Thankfully, the CAPS member was not injured in the incident. But, they did press charges and there will be a court date. If you like to know when it is, please, email me and ask.

This incident occurred in the 2900 block of North Hamlin Avenue, around 10:00am on yesterday's date, September 10th. As the story begins, our CAPS member was at home, working on something at their desk, when their dog started barking in the front room. They went to investigate and saw four Polish drunks across the street, drinking vodka out of a half gallon bottle. The vodka came from Bristol's, 3086 North Milwaukee Avenue. Black plastic bag. So, as this is a problem in this part of Avondale, our CAPS member dialed 911 to report it. This 911 call was made at 9:49am.

By 10am, the CPD had not yet shown up to the scene. Later, it was learned that an unmarked car came by, but 911 had given them the wrong information. They thought the four drunks were inside a vacant house on Hamlin (which there are none on that block, by the way, from what I can see) and they were not looking for drunks on the sidewalk. So, at 10:01am, our faithful CAPS member called 911 yet again. They reported the drunks again, and told the dispatcher that they would be going outside to take pictures. On that note, I'll explain why pictures were to be taken. You see, CAPS community members had a meeting on Wednesday Downtown with the LCC (Liquor Control Commission) regarding Bristol's selling to drunks. As part of the meeting, the community members were instructed to take pictures of drunks they see drinking and what not.

Five minutes later, CPD still did not come, and our CAPS member went outside to snap some photos. The drunks noticed the CAPS member, and the CAPS member took their pictures. Here's where the attack happens.

This man, a not-so-much drunk who enables the drinkers on Milwaukee, was out there this morning. The CAPS member and this drunk have had a run-in with each other before. If any of you recall, there was a call for an assault back in August on a Sunday morning around 11:15am at Milwaukee and Avers. This guy, who rides a blue girl's bike, was involved in that assault, and is the one who attacked our CAPS member yesterday. This guy was previously mad because of our CAPS member "bothering" his drunk buddies. The last time, the guy yelled at and got into the face of our CAPS member. But this morning, he was way more intoxicated, which lowered his inhibitions, which caused the attack.

The CAPS member backed into the street, snapped this picture and the man lunged for him. He got hold of the CAPS member's arm and tried wrenching the camera out of their hands. He cut himself in the effort. So, then, the CAPS member broke away and the man chased them. This caused a bunch of commotion on the street. People came out of their houses. People who were driving by stopped to look. That was when multiple calls to 911 where made regarding the attack on the street. As soon as that beginned to happen, I'm told the police beginned to pull up quickly. The attacker picked up the blue girl's bicycle he had and was walking it up Hamlin toward Milwaukee. The officers went after him, put him in the car and brought him back to the CAPS member.

The attacker was not too cooperative with CPD. He refused to give his last name to responding officers. He pretended to speak only Polish, when it is known for a fact that he does speak a least a little English. In the long run, thankfully, the attacker was arrested. The charges were drinking on the public way, and battery. The officers said he would be taken to jail but would probably be released in a couple of hours. They said he would be warned to stay away from the CAPS member and this street.

I just wanted to make all of you aware of this incident. Please, be careful, everyone. The streets are NOT safe in this neighborhood. Even from drunks, now. This is upsetting, and B.S., I think. This situation needs to stop, NOW. This cannot go on any longer. I am so outraged hearing about this attack that I can only see red right about now. What do we have to do in order for this B.S. to stop??? Will it take getting seriously injured before someone steps up to stop this, or what?? God forbid that, but someone in power needs to address this, HERE AND NOW. I am honestly really sick and tired of hearing the excuses about why nothing is being done. They are absolutely pathetic at this point. This situation has gotten so bad to where a CAPS member is attacked, for crying out loud! We can't have this happen to any CAPS member. And that goes for all other neighborhoods here in the city. I don't think any situation in any neighborhood has gotten to the point where the criminals try to injure a CAPS member, and I will be damned if it happens here.

I think a formal complaint should be filed with the OEMC (911 Center) because of the seriousness of the situation. Once again, they have endangered yet another citizen's life. I would personally prefer a lawsuit, because of all the incidents in the last few months in either when they constantly give the wrong information to the officers, or where the police aren't sent at all, but they would probably be a bit extreme.

But, on a more serious note, maybe a lawsuit or compliant should be filed with Bristol's, for clearly giving them the liquor in the first place. They are in CLEAR violation of yesterday's meeting. This is a main reason why I am outraged. Also, I am glad that other people called 911 when the attack occurred. That is a really, really good thing. I think it saved the CAPS member from getting physically injured. I for one am thankful that they weren't physically injured by this dangerous man.

Now is the time for us, my fellow community members, I think, to DEMAND action in this neighborhood. I now see a reason to protest to this situation. It has gotten out of control. If these vicious attacks can happen to a CAPS member, only God knows what can happen to a person who just lives in the community. So, it's time to step up. It's time to tell the City of Chicago that we will NOT take this anymore! We will not allow people getting attacked by drunks in front of our own home! It has gotten to the point with me that I think it is time we make some phone calls to the press. I think we need to show the rest of Chicago, and the rest of the oh-so-lovely politics, what is happening in this quadrant of Avondale.

I for one am no longer taking pictures of these guys because of this attack. I honestly am afraid at this point, and I am not willing to be rolled away on a stretcher over this.

Comments or questions? Send them here, or email me them.

Thanks,
Timmy

Good evening, everyone. I attended 1732's CAPS meeting last night. This was my first and only visit to that meeting. This Beat is not too different from Beat 2523, at least south of Addison. There were about 15 to 20 people at the meeting. Not as much as my Beat, 2523, usually has, but it's a pretty good amount.

The old issues that were talked about from last month's meeting were the ones at 3401 N. Pulaski, 3258 N. Milwaukee (Wally's Market) and 3216 N Drake. There were at least four more problems, but those were for north of Addison, and those are not in the community, so I will not mention those. The problem 3401 Pulaski had was homeless people loitering behind there, loud parties in the building, drugs, among other things. The homeless problem was the largest. Contact cards were done from there. The problem Wally's Market had was also homeless loitering. They are constantly there, and even cook pigeons on occasions! Contact cards were also done from Wally's. The problem 3216 Drake had was illegal car repairs at night in the alley. Contact cards were done from there.

New problems:
* 3900 block of W. Eddy - Burglary of a house. Suspects may have been day laborers who were doing construction work on a building being worked on in the block.
* 3200 block of N. Hamlin - Two girls, one a 12 yr old named Jennifer, and another one, 13 yr old Maria, are really causing trouble on this block. They possibly live at 3241 on Hamlin. There have been several and several fights on the block, involving about 10 or so people, because of these girls. They also bring in gangbangers, possibly Cobras, to also hang out. Large groups gather. These girls are very rude to community members.

The CAPS Sergeant shared with us with contact cards look like. They are done so CPD can have basic information on whoever they stop. Also, there were reports of narcotic calls along Addison, on the south side of the street. There were people doing drugs. This was across the street from Athletic Park.

Other observations:
> I met a fan of mine at this meeting. They are one of the Beat Facilitators for Beat 1732. It was nice to meet them.

For this Beat meeting post, I'd like to say thanks to the residents for being involved in this meeting. Work still needs to be done, however. I ask for those residents who read the blog but don't come to the meetings (because they don't want to), please, go!

Next meeting: October 13th, 2010, at Avondale Park (3516 W. School), at 7:00pm.

Thank you,
Timmy

Chain Stolen On Keystone

Good afternoon, everyone, it's 3:30pm. Yet another good day at school. This school year so far has really been smooth. Hope it remains that way. Anyway, it's chilly out. I think it only got to about 70 today, and tonight will be around 50. Also, I will have a post from the Beat 1732 CAPS meeting that I went to last night as soon as I can. I've just been busy with school and everything. Here's crime for this afternoon and early evening.

3:32pm - Robbery. 2118 N Keystone. The son has his chain stolen from him.

3:36 to 3:43pm - Fell asleep. Sorry.

3:50pm - Narcotics. Fullerton and Central Park.

5:19pm - The 4:27pm job is coded 11BoyPaul.

5:20pm - Beat 5407 had a car take off from them. Lost it at Diversey and Whipple. It has a (partial?) plate of LPP449. It was heading towards Schubert on Whipple.

5:56pm - Shots Fired. Milwaukee and Central Park. Gunshots fired; caller's car was shot up.

6:07pm - Disturbance. 3035 N Milwaukee. Homeless male sleeping in the rear.

6:23pm - I have to go eat. I'll be back soon.

6:53pm - I'm back.

7:08pm - Battery in progress. 4141 W Barry. Gangbangers fighting in front.

7:27pm - Narcotics. 24X0 N Kildare.

7:55pm - Some call over at 3119 N Haussen.

8:52pm - It appears that the Sergeant on 2540 today is retiring. They had a retirement party for him in the station this afternoon. 2534 came over the air to thank him for all of the times he helped them out over the years. Personally speaking, I met this Sergeant at the roll call last month at George and Ridgeway, and he was a decent guy. Along with the coppers, I'd like to wish him a happy retirement. Have a great retirement, Serg, and thanks for all of your service you provided to all of us!!!

9:13pm - Robbery. George and Avers. Caller was robbed by two male Blacks with fake guns.

9:26pm - Suspicious vehicle. 2858 N Tripp. A vehicle parked in front of a vacant house and no one got out.

9:28pm - Wanted from the 9:13pm job may be a white van w/ a "Chicago Fire Soccer Team" logo on it. We aren't sure, however, because the victim only speaks Spanish.

9:40pm - Missing person report. 4042 W Nelson.

9:41pm - A unit is on a traffic stop at 2724 N Pulaski.

9:42pm - I'm out for the night. I'll be back tomorrow afternoon. Good night, everyone.

Burglar Alarm On Ridgeway

Good afternoon, everyone, it's 4:23pm. The first day of school was pretty decent. There are a couple of things that made me a little mad with some things a couple of our teachers in my program were doing, but I'm sure they will realize their mistakes sooner or later, and fix them. Other than that, it was a good day. Anyway, it's nice out, but windy. It feels good. Also, tomorrow, I will probably attend 1732's CAPS meeting, which is at Athletic Park, 3546 W Addison. Here's crime for today.

4:44pm - Burglar alarm. 2969 N Ridgeway.

5:32pm - Domestic disturbance. 2417 N Avers. Argument with baby daddy.

6:23pm - I have to go eat. I'll be back real soon.

6:32pm - I'm back.

6:36pm - Person w/ a gun. Wabansia and Avers. Male in a black shirt is walking towards Hamlin. He has a gun.

9:05pm - I have to go. I'll be back tomorrow. Good night, everyone.
