Zone 3 - 012 and 014 Monitoring To Resume

After seeing Timmy's post about Zone 3 monitoring getting to be a bit too much for him, I decided to step up and make the offer to be in charge of Zone 3 monitoring. Timmy was excited to have me step up to do that, and so here's the deal:

I will be monitoring Zone 3 on the weekends and during those times when activity in 012 and 014 can be expected to be at high levels, posing a risk to community members at large. Those of you who follow us here will see that I usually only post confirmed warnings about specific violent incidents that pose grave risk to the public in those areas we pay attention to.

Given Timmy's need to have less of a load on him here, and his need to successfully complete his college studies, I will be a bit more active here than I usually am. Everyone enjoy your summer, and know that I look forward to interacting with all of you!

Burglar Alarm On Parker

Good afternoon, everyone, it's 4:30pm. I'm monitoring the entire portion of 25 in our coverage area from now until 4:50pm, then I'll be covering Zones K and R (most of 25) until 6:30. I will not be monitoring tomorrow, as I'll be covering the Gay Pride Parade over in Lakeview. I'll be on my other blog with that. I'll be back on Monday morning with 25. Speaking of Monday, I start my first day of work. I work from 9am to 1pm at City Hall, but I'm only there three days a week. The other two days are spent at a training facility. I'm so excited to be working, but I'm really nervous, too. I can't wait to see what this job holds for me. Lastly, as I've been saying, if you can, please take the time out to vote on the readership poll. It closes on Tuesday. With that, here's crime for this portion of this afternoon.

5:11pm - Burglar alarm. 41XX W Parker.

6:30pm - Well, this is the only call I've heard the whole time I monitored, and with that, I'm going to go for the night. I'll be back on Monday. Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Positive Loitering Event/Walk TONIGHT -- 6:00 P.M. @ Allen/Kimball

Hello, everyone. I know this may be on short notice, and I apologize for the inconvenience, but I have received this notice regarding a positive loitering event/walk that will be occurring this evening at 6:00 p.m., at the corner of Allen and Kimball.

From Nextdoor Neighbor's Southwest Avondale section:
"Sending out a reminder for tomorrow's CAPS Positive Loitering & Beat Walk before the West Logan Square Block Club meeting:

We will be meeting on the corner of Allen & Kimball Ave. at 6pm, Thursday, June 27th. We will "Loiter" for a bit and then have a beat walk down Allen, Wisner and Wellington, ending at the 7pm community meeting at St. Nicholai Church on the corner of Wellington & Kedzie.

Everyone is invited to join us!! Bring noise makers :-)

Please get involved in your community.....come meet others in your neighborhood!!"

Unfortunately, since I have a class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the summer, I will NOT be in attendance for this event. But I do encourage EVERYONE who lives in the area to please, please attend this. Allen Avenue has been a problematic area for sometime now, and this is one of the ways we can address it. Meet your neighbors, get involved and make a change!

For anyone who does go, please e-mail me some insight and/or photos if you can.

Thank you,

Man Sleeps On Porch On Monticello, Reckless Driver @ George/Springfield

Good morning, everyone, it's 6:25am. I'm monitoring 25 from now until 10:49am, then I'm going to take a very short break until 11, at which time I'll return with 25 until 4:50pm. At 4:50, until 10, I'll be monitoring Zones K and R (basically most of 25), and then from 10 to midnight, I'll be covering all of 25 again. Tomorrow, I am letting all of you guys deciding what I monitor. Please let me know by 5am tomorrow morning what you want to see monitor, and whichever District/area gets a majority vote, I will cover that area. I will be covering Zone L on Friday. For those of you who aren't on the Facebook fan page, I have decided that I am not going to be implementing a new round of "Zones" after this readership poll closes. I am going back to monitoring entire Districts. It was a fun and good experiment while it lasted, but it did not work the way I expected it to. Furthermore, and I'm sure this is going to be a disappointment to all of my 14th District readers, but I will no longer be monitoring 14 on a regular basis. For the rest of the summer, I will cover it three times a month. My coverage of 17 and 25 is going to increase. 25 will be monitored on a regular basis, with 17 being monitored once every week (if not, I will be covering it four times a month). I had a lot of feedback from the people on the Facebook page, which I really appreciated by the way, and there is a big demand for me to monitor 25 and 17 once again on a regular basis. I have realized that I cannot please everyone, and I am no longer going to make that effort. As long as a majority is pleased, that's all that matters to me. With that, here's crime for today.

7:19am - Disturbance. 30XX N Monticello. Male sleeping on the caller's porch, caller doesn't know who he is.

8:40am - Reckless driver. George and Springfield. Male White with short brown pants is driving a brown vehicle and he's drunk.

9:05am - Disturbance. 28XX N Kildare. Two males throwing garbage all over the alley.

9:52am to 10:34am - Zone 12 had to switch cover to Citywide 6 due to an open radio and I was not here to switch the radio. I'm sorry, guys.

10:48am - Burglar alarm. 2121 N Keeler. At the Nixon school.

10:49am - I'm going on my break until 11. I'll be back.

11:00am - And I'm back.

11:56am - Assault in progress. 39XX W North Ave. Male Hispanic, 5'7, heavy set with no shirt and blue jeans is using a hammer to destroy the caller's property.

12:00pm - Beat car 2533 is giving a slow down on the 11:56am job. He's requesting a call back.

1:30pm - I need to go for a little while. Have an errand to everyone. I'll be back.

2:27pm - I'm back. Good afternoon, everyone.

3:00pm - Beat 2583 is doing patrol on the 4400 block of W Diversey this afternoon. Event number is 09516.

3:01pm - Narcotics. Monticello and North Ave.

4:30pm to 6:30pm - I fell asleep. I'm sorry, guys. I'll be covering this, 1:30-2:27 and the 9:52 to 10:32 period on Saturday.

7:31pm - 1) Holding the offender. 29XX N Ridgeway. A man's being held in the alley. 2) Battery in progress. 36XX W Oakdale. Few calls for two males beating up on one; most likely to the Ridgeway call.

7:38pm - Fire. 39XX W Wellington. Smoke coming out of a building.

7:40pm - I have to go eat. I'll be back soon.

7:54pm - I'm back. Good evening, everyone.

8:01pm - Assist the P.O. 37XX W Palmer. Beat 5836, an Evidence Tech, is on scene at a burglary, and the victim says the offender is in the alley. Beats 2561Eddie and 2565Adam are on their way so far.

8:02pm - A couple of more calls just came in for the 7:31pm jobs. Beat 2546 has the Oakdale offender. They're two different things. Apparently, Ridgeway was some kind of group fight while Oakdale was a battery to a female.

8:04pm - A slow down is being given on Palmer. It's nonsense.

8:05pm - Backlog in 25 at 20:05 hours.

8:17pm - Shots Fired. Armitage and Central park. Couple of gunshots heard.

8:35pm - Some call in the area. I think it was on 2524's Beat.

9:58pm - Disturbance. 30XX N Monticello. Males loitering in front.

11:09pm  - Disturbance. 1800 block of N Harding.

12:00am - I'm going to go for the night. Depending on any feedback I get by 5am tomorrow, I may or may not see you all tomorrow. If not, I'll be back Friday. Have a good night, everyone!

Post-Blackhawk's Game Issues @ North Ave./Damen/Milwaukee Ave., Big Accident @ Western/North Ave.

Good morning, everyone, it's 12am. It most likely looks like I'm going to monitor 14 today, as I only have heard back from one person on what should be monitored today. But it's not too late for you guys to give me your opinions. You have until 5am this morning to get back to me either here, the Facebook page, or on my crime blog e-mail address. 11:10am - 2524 has a traffic stop at 4242 W Fullerton.

11:20am - 1) The 11:09am accident is actually at 3927 W Belmont. Sounds like there's injures, too, as EMS is heard pulling up in the background. 2) Check the well being. 29XX N Lawndale. Caller's sister hasn't been heard from in a couple of days and she has a history of being a victim of domestic violence.

11:51am - 2521 is coding out the 29XX Lawndale well-being check as 1Paul, that person's going to make contact with their family, but now 2521 is running a plate on an unoccupied car down the street.

5:19pm - Traffic accident. 2200 W Fullerton. Two cars, no injures.

5:44pm - Traffic accident. Rockwell and Belmont. Two cars on the bridge right at the Chicago river, injures.

5:48pm - Beat car 1412 has a working fire at 3247 W Diversey. I know this is not in today's coverage area, but it sounds pretty bad. Apartment caught fire and some more units are needed for traffic control. Beat car 1431 is headed over. No wonder why I heard so many firetrucks go by my house about 10 minutes ago.....

5:51pm - Everything's okay at 1412's fire. It's out and it isn't too serious.

6:25pm - Burglar alarm. 31XX N Richmond.

6:30pm - Disturbance. 24XX W Medill.

7:32pm - Person w/ a gun. Lyndale and Maplewood. 10:57pm - Disturbance. Spaulding and Diversey. Irate man yelling on Spaulding just south of Diversey. Probably the same thing from the 10:15pm job.

11:20pm - Fireworks. Diversey and Kedzie.

11:36pm - I'm back with 25 until midnight.

11:44pm - I just remembered that tomorrow is going to be the last day of the school year for most CPS schools, and since most of the schools are getting out at the same time for the most part, I won't be able to monitor 14, 17 and 25 all at the same time. Usually, 25 has the most problems with school dismissals on the last day, so I really want to prioritize my monitoring to 25 for tomorrow morning. If anyone has scanners and can listen to 14 and 17 for me, please comment here or on the Facebook page, or e-mail me at avondalelscrimeblotter@gmail.com by 7am tomorrow morning. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!!

Crime Blotter For June 22, 2013 (Monitoring 25)

Good afternoon, everyone, it's 5:55pm. I've decided to monitor today in spite of saying yesterday I wasn't going to. I got some personal errands done, and I'm not needed at the block party on Ridgeway, so I'll just monitor. You guys need me more, anyway :). I'm going to monitor 25 tonight and tomorrow from 8am to 2pm, then from 2pm to 10pm tomorrow, I'll cover Zones A, B, F, M, N and O. Finally, Zone L will be monitored from 10pm to midnight tomorrow night. Again, I want to apologize for my lack of monitoring the last few days. I've been a bit busy with my summer class and then getting ready for the job interview on Thursday. I have less to do this coming week, so I'll be catching up on the archives and monitoring more. Lastly, starting tomorrow until July 2nd, I will have a poll up here that I'd like for everyone to take. As I said a couple of months ago, every three months I will be analyzing readership data to get an idea of where the most demand is for me to monitor in the area. So for the poll, it is just going to ask you what major intersection you live near. I ask all of you to please take a couple of minutes to analyze it and answer accordingly. Thank you, and here's crime for this afternoon and evening.

6:44pm to 7:02pm - I had to eat, so I didn't listen to the radio at this time.

7:04pm - Beat 2565Charlie has a street stop at 1633 N. Hamlin, needs a unit with a working PDT. Beat 2544 is coming over, from a distance, though.

7:05pm - Beat car 2522 is telling 2544 to disregard, they're right down the street.

7:23pm - Beat car 2523 is coding out multiple calls of a loud music disturbance at 30XX N Davlin as a 5Paul. The music's not too loud.

7:44pm - 1) Disturbance. 23XX N Springfield. Cars are blocking the street. 2) Parker. On 2535's Beat.

7:58pm - Person wanted. 36XX W Belmont. People inside the vacant location, caller thinks they have their bike.

8:24pm - Loud music disturbance. 18XX N Pulaski.

8:37pm - Shots Fired. Barry and Karlov. Three shots heard, one call only so far.

9:23pm - Loud music disturbance. 37XX W Cortland.

9:27pm - Beat car 2524 gets something on the PDT.

9:39pm - Vice complaint. On 2544's PDT.

9:40pm - Backlog in 25 taken out at 21:40 hours. Beat 2520 commends Dispatch for a great job done today.

9:42pm - Parker. On 2523Robert's Beat.

9:45pm - Gang disturbance. Kilbourn and Schubert. Five males and two female Hispanics are out on the corner, representing and stopping cars.

9:55pm - Gang disturbance. Diversey and Lawndale. Eight to nine of them loitering.

10:06pm - I'm too tired to stay up any longer, so with that, I'm headed off to bed. I'll see you all in the morning. Have a good night, everyone!

Man Appears Out Of It @ Diversey/Kimball/Milwaukee Ave.

Good morning, everyone, it's 11:30am. I'm monitoring the Zone L area today (Belmont to Palmer, Central Park to Sacramento) from now until about 5pm or so and then again from whatever time I arrive back home until midnight. I have an outing this evening I'm attending on the south side at 7:30 so I have to leave around 5 to get there on time. Anyway, all of you will be happy to know that I am now officially employed. I went for my interview at my scheduled time yesterday and did all the necessary paperwork, and as nervous as I was, I received word two hours later that I got the job. Although it is only for 6 weeks, as it's for the youth summer program here in the City, it is MUCH needed income for my family and I, as a lot of you probably know. I'm so happy I got it :). My orientation is this coming Wednesday and I begin work on July 1st. I don't know, but it seems like things are really starting to turn around for me, and for the good. I feel better about things in general. On that note, I want to apologize for not running this blog as effectively as I should've been doing this week. I've had such a busy week and I'll be truthful, my time management skills suck. I'm trying to work on that issue. I'm going to try my best to get all of those archives out of the way by Tuesday, though. Unfortunately, tomorrow, I am not going to monitor. I am assisting in help setting up and tearing down a block party on Ridgeway, and will also be there on and off throughout the day to help make sure things run smoothly, so I don't want to listen to the radio on and off for little time periods only not to hear anything, so I think it's better if I don't monitor tomorrow. With that, here's crime for portions of today.

1:58pm - 1) Check the well being. Diversey/Kimball/Milwaukee Ave. Man walking down the street towards St. Louis on Diversey looks out of it. 2) Some call in the area.

1:59pm - Traffic accident. Spaulding and Fullerton.

2:45pm - I have to go for a little while. Something unexpected came up. I'll be back. See you all.

4:00pm - I'm back. Good afternoon, everyone.

5:00pm - And now I'm heading out. I'll see you all later this evening. Have a good afternoon/evening, everyone!

11:36pm - I'm FINALLY back, LOL. Good evening, everyone.

12:00am - I'm going to go for the night. I'll see you all on Sunday. I can't make any promises, but I am going to try my very best to catch up on all the archives I need to listen to from this past week. I'm sorry that my monitoring has been so horrible lately, but I've been so busy the last few days. Have a good night, everyone, and I'll see you all on Sunday.

U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Enhanced Sentences for Repeat Offenders

Earlier this morning, the United States Supreme Court ruled on the following case that affects the entire nation as relates to enhanced sentencing for repeat offenders:

The United States Supreme Court has just issued a final ruling on Enhanced Sentences for Repeat Offenders and it reads as follows: SCOTUS Ruling on Repeat Offender Enhanced Sentences is 8-1: 11-9540, Descamps. Per Kagan. The modified categorical approach does not apply to statutes that contain a single indivisible set of elements. In Plain English, it is now harder for the government to use the facts of a prior conviction to enhance a federal criminal sentence. The decision of the court of appeals against the defendant is reversed.

Burglary Report On Winchester, Shots Fired @ Cortland/Sawyer

Good morning, everyone, it's 9:15am. I'm monitoring Zones A, B, F, M, N and O from now until 2:45pm and again from 10pm to midnight, then tomorrow I'll be covering 25. I will most likely not be monitoring Saturday, because I'm needed to help get things set up for a block party in the morning hours and I'll probably need to stick around to help out. For anyone who lives on or near the 2900 block of N. Ridgeway,  you are more than welcome to join us for a block party on the block on Saturday. I've been to the last two and they've been good, especially with some of the musical selections and the games they have for the kids. So we'll see how that goes. Today, in addition to my routine class on Tuesday/Thursday evenings for the summer, I have a job interview on the near west side at 4. It's for the youth summer program here in the city. This is my first job interview and first job opportunity ever, so I'm somewhat nervous, but really excited as well. Well, with that, here's crime for portions of today.

10:03am - Burglary report. 17XX N Winchester.

11:09am - Not officially in our coverage area for today, but I have a report of “Shots Fired” at Cortland and Sawyer. Three shots were just heard, some kind of station wagon was seen fleeing towards Bloomingdale on Sawyer.

11:10am - Beat 1461 is giving a slow down on the “Shots Fired”. He’s been two blocks away for sometime now and has heard nothing.

11:20am - EMS run. 26XX N Francisco. Possible DOA, man not breathing.

1:16pm - I'm going to go for the day. I'll be back tomorrow. Have a great day, everyone!

****ATTEMPTED CHILD LURING / ATTEMPT ABDUCTION BY STRANGER ALERT****

News Agency: ABC 7 - Story Here

Law Enforcement Agency: Chicago

Police Unit / District Assigned: 017

Detective Division: CPD Detective Area North - Special Victim's Unit, Violent Crimes Unit

Crime Type: Serious Index Crime - Kidnap Attempt, Victim under 16 years old. Attempted Child Luring.

UCR Offense Code: 1792 - Lure or Attempt, Child under 16

RD# Not Available

EVENT# Not Available

Incident Location: 303 - Sidewalk / 304 - Street

Incident Address: 3900 block Argyle

Offender Description / Offender M.O.:

Offender is described as a white or white Hispanic male in his 50's, black hair combed straight back, chubby face, and wearing a white button down shirt.

The male offender in a white vehicle with rust on the bottom of the passenger door, and a spoiler, pulled along side the female victim under 12 years of age who was out walking her dog at the time of the offense.

The offender rolled down the window, waved his hand towards the girl and yelled "Hey, hey you, come here." The victim ran.The offender drove off in his vehicle at a high rate of speed.

Safety Strategy Advisory:

Parents need to be aware of where their children are at at all times, children and families should have an open dialogue with each other about personal safety awareness / strategies / how to deal with emergencies involving attempts at luring, kidnapping, or violence. Children and Parents should always have ready communication with each other via cell phone and a network of teachers, neighbors, and other trusted adults and childhood friends in the community. Parents, older teens, and teachers / school administrators need to check the sex offender and violent crimes against youth registries on a regular basis. Children and parents should work together to vary the times and routes the child takes to school, friends' houses, and other places often visited by children...ALWAYS know HOW, WHEN, and WHY to use each route and timing variance, know how long it takes to use each, and the various forms of public transit in each area of the route.

If an offender successfully grabs you, let the offender have the property or article of clothing, even if it means the clothing tears away....the property goes one way and you go another! The advantage is that YOU get away with your life and your safety intact. YOUR LIFE CANNOT BE REPLACED, your property CAN. KIDS: fight and leave marks on the offender if he/she makes physical contact with you. Scream and get loud, do everything to call attention to the situation. Forget about your backpack once you are able to run! DROP the backpack, it only slows you down and allows the offender to catch up with you. Your school books and everything in that backpack can be replaced, YOU CANNOT REPLACED!! Where do you run? Go to the closest store, restaurant, coffee shop, school, firehouse, hospital, police station, closest trusted friend or neighbor, run home if you are close enough to make it there. These are all safe places where a child can get help in a situation like this.

For the remainder of this week, I'm just headed to class, headed up to my high school tomorrow and Friday to see my former classmates in the autism program, and a job interview on Thursday. Yes, for those of you who've been on me for so long about having a job, you'll be happy to know that I received a call yesterday from the summer youth program here in the City and I have my interview on Thursday. I'm a bit nervous about the interview, but really excited about the potential job. Best thing about it, it's only six weeks, so I'll have a couple of weeks in August to really relax and do this blog before I go back to school for the fall and possibly a part-time job then also. People In Back Door Of Vacant Property On Ridgeway, Accident @ Armitage/Harding

Good afternoon, everyone. It's 12:47pm. I apologize for being late, but I had some things to do this morning. Today, I will be finally covering 25 for the first time in about a week or so, and I will be covering Zones K and R tomorrow. These two Zones are in 25, and actually, cover more than half of my coverage area in the District. Truth be told, I'm happy to be monitoring my home District today. With all my monitoring of 14 lately, though, I'm really starting to get a good idea of what the exact problems and issues are within 14, and I've been getting a good sense of where the problems are. Tonight, I have the Avondale Neighborhood Association meeting over at Carl Linne school at 3221 N. Sacramento, which starts at 7. During that time, I will have my microphone equipment record the radio. Lastly, I want to quickly give a thought on the input I've been getting from my coverage of the Puerto Rican Fest. I appreciate the input, and with that said, for next year, I will be going back to only monitoring it for only one day and I will also try my best to make it down there for a day. I want to see for myself how it is, since quite a few people are saying it's not as bad as it sounds. But I digress. Here's crime for today.

2:12pm - Criminal trespass in progress. 2535 N Ridgeway. Five males and a female are in the back door of the vacant property.

2:57pm - Beat 2582 is asking for an event number for foot patrol along Fullerton this afternoon. It's 10993.

2:58pm - Ridgeway is a 19P per 2544, but he's letting Dispatch know that people might go back in there so she might need to dispatch someone again later.

3:22pm - Beat 2505 is doing a park check at Kelvyn.

3:47pm - Beat car 2523 is pulling an RD number from 31XX N Ridgeway for a bona fide garage burglary. It's HW322934 with the event number of 10047. I never heard this call dispatched, though.

4:15pm - Parker. 2200 N Pulaski.

4:16pm - 1) Disturbance. 43XX W George. Drinkers. 2) Assault. Monticello and Milwaukee Ave. Male Hispanic with a blue shirt, black pants, brown boots who's bald and has a dark complexion threatened to stab the caller.

4:26pm - Person down. George and Central Park. Two people down, unresponsive.

5:47pm - Beat car 2525 has an open hydrant at Dickens and Lawndale.

9:04pm - I'm back. Good evening, everyone.

10:33pm - Some call at 17XX N Lawndale.

12:00am - I'm going to go for the night. I'll be back tomorrow. Have a good night, everyone!

Puerto Rican Festival Coverage, Day #4

Good morning, everyone, it's 12am. I'm monitoring day #4 of the Puerto Rican Festival in Humboldt Park. Today is the last day for it until next year, and I bet at least some of you are thankful that it is, especially those of you who live nearest to the park. Originally, I wasn't going to monitor the PR Fest today, but things got crazy last night (and I heard from a couple of people Friday night wasn't any better). We'll see how it goes today. Like Thursday and yesterday, I'm monitoring Zones C, D, E, G, P, Q and S. Zone S is specifically set up for the festival, and it covers Homan to Western between Division and North Ave. Basically, my boundaries for today are pretty much Central Park to the west and Palmer to the north, with various boundaries to the east and south. The eastern borders are Leavitt (Palmer to Armitage), Damen (Armitage to North Ave.) and Western (North Ave. to Division), respectively, with the southern borders being North Ave. (Damen to Western) and Division (Western to Homan). We will see how things go today, and if things are considerably calm, then I will only cover the PR Fest until about 7 or 8pm tonight. For those of you who are new to the blog, or just need a reminder, but I do NOT cover this festival to be negative under any circumstances. If anything, I want everyone who goes to have a fantastic time. With that being said, however, at the PR Fest, we tend to run into numerous gang and crime issues, and quite frankly, I have heard some really alarming things in the previous years of monitoring it. I also heard some pretty crazy things yesterday. My readers who have been on this blog for a long time can attest to that. I also cover it so that residents can keep up with what is going on in their community. With all of that said, I will no longer delay supplying what goes on today. Here's crime.

12:00am - Beat 6732David is dispersing 40 for gang loitering at North and Sawyer. Console time is 00:00 and the event number is 00021.

12:01am - Beat 1480 and his team are officially released from the PR Fest. They're headed back to Wicker Park now.

12:10am - Gang disturbance. 16XX N Francisco. Ten of them are loitering in front.

12:11am - Battery in progress. Damen/Milwaukee Ave./North Ave. Several people fighting.

12:12am - Beat 1462David has a Buick Century with bullet holes in it at North and Kedzie. Apparently, there were shots fired. The offending vehicle is a gray vehicle with rear end damage, and it fled north on Kedzie to Wabansia, then east on Wabansia towards Troy.

12:13am - Beat 1480 is giving a slow down at the 12:11am job. The fight's done but he does need EMS for a guy who's bleeding from his lip.

12:14am - 1462D's witnesses are now saying the vehicle fled east down the north alley of North Ave., then down the east alley of Kedzie from North Ave.

12:15am - The witnesses are saying that the vehicle was a shiny gray Honda with black tinted windows, and there were four to five male Hispanics in it.
