Traffic Stop On Eddy, Car-Opening Device Needed On Addison

Good morning, everyone, it's 7:30am. I'm monitoring 17 for those of you who live North of Belmont today from now until 1pm. I'm sorry for a lack of posts in the last couple of weeks or so, but due to school and the stuff that's happened with my mother in the last couple of days, it's been impossible. But, this semester is over in two weeks, so after that, I'll be able to post regularly. Here's crime for this morning and early afternoon.

Bulletin: Some Important News

Hello, everyone. I have some news I need to share with all of you, and it's not good, unfortunately. This is not about my family's financial situation, but it is still important. I just wanted to let you all know that I may not blog for a few days, or perhaps maybe even a week or two. My mother is really sick with something (we're not sure what it is) and she was taken to the hospital this evening by ambulance. I am waiting to hear about her condition and will be going to the hospital if she is admitted, and will stay with her.

I just wanted to let you all know that in case you might be looking for posts but don't see them. Also, to the ANA -- I am going to try my very best, and I think most likely I will, to show up to the positive loitering event on Thursday at Diversey and Ridgeway. But family comes first, especially when it's your mother.

Please keep my mother in your thoughts and prayers. I pray for all of you and our neighborhoods each and everyday. I will see all of you soon.

Thank you,
Tim (AKA Timmy) Granzow
Avondale/Logan Square Crime Blotter

Update, 4/29/13: I want to thank everyone for their concern, thoughts and prayers. My mother was released from the hospital Thursday evening and she is doing a lot better than before. She has no major health issues, thankfully. She had severe anemia, which was the main reason into her hospitalization, but that has been treated and she now has medicine that will continue to improve her health. Most of all, our relationship has gotten so much better and it was beautiful to see my family all come together in this time. I am thankful for life, and going through this has taught me to be thankful at all times because life is way too short to be mad or upset constantly. I want to thank all of you again for your support and encouragement. Without you guys, and my church family, I wouldn't have gotten through this.

Two Armed Robbery Offenders In Custody - Luis Quizhpe and Family Become Community Heroes

Cornell Mack
Keith Owens

Luis Quizhpe and his family were minding their own business in the family business on the 2200 block of North Western Avenue, on the border of Logan Square and Bucktown, located in Chicago's 014th police district, when these two men above attempted to rob him at gunpoint. These two robbery offenders got more than they bargained for when Luis Quizhpe brough a baseball bat to this fight, and won.

Although Mr. Quizhpe suffered some minor injuries, he is alive and well. The video below from ABC 7 Chicago tells the tale of a well known, well respected Chicago family whose dream would not be stolen:

Police officers in the 014th district responded and worked with Chicago Police Detectives from the Area North Detective Division at Belmont and Western in a timely manner, resulting in the arrest of Cornell Mack. News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien said Mack was in custody thursday, at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Mack suffered a gunshot wound during the robbery. Police say Mack was shot by Owens, and his (Mack's) bail has been set at $750,000

According to ABC 7 Chicago: "Mack has a long criminal history dating back to 1978. Court records show he has been arrested more than 22 times and has served time in prison at least five different times"

Once Mack was in custody, Detectives moved quickly to find and arrest his accomplice, Keith Owens. Owens is from Minnesota, and it is unknown how he came to Chicago or why he was here. Owens appeared in court Wednesday to face attempted murder and armed robbery charges.

The Quizhpe family came to the U.S. from Ecuador, and built their family business while building meaningful relationships in the Logan Square community where they have been a mainstay for several decades. Luis Quizhpe, his wife, two sons, one daughter, and other family have been committed to their community, and have been there for others on multiple occasions. In this time, they are being remembered by those who are standing to support them as heroes even before this robbery.

Ask anyone in the Logan Square community and anywhere else who has gotten to know Luis and his family, and you will hear tales of laughter, compassion, character, discipline, love, and much more! The photo of Mr. Quizhpe above, with the welcoming smile, the warm, and friendly approach, is exactly what the community has known Mr. Quizhpe for, and what has been the main attraction at his family business.

Man Yells On Central Park

Good afternoon, everyone, it's 3:10pm. It's a cloudy afternoon with temps in the 40s and it'll remain this way through the evening. I'm sure most of you have seen the news by now regarding the bombing that took place in Boston this afternoon at a marathon that was taking place. So far, 28 are injured and two are dead. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of these victims, as I'm sure all of yours are as well, and let's take this time to remember to appreciate the time we have with our families and friends. Life is short so really cherish the time you have with your loved ones. Besides from being busy with school, this is what I've been doing with my mother, especially now that her health is getting bad. We're not sure what exactly she is sick with, but she doesn't feel like herself. We'll be having her checked out by a doctor in a few days or so. Then I've got to flyer the neighborhood for the ANA clean-up on Saturday and leave small flyers at people's houses. The clean-up starts at 10am and I'm a street captain once again. Last year, I was in charge of Koz Park, but since no one showed up, I will be in charge of a different area this year. I'm in charge of having Hamlin to Central Park between Diversey and George cleaned up. I have a specific corner I'm supposed to meet all of my volunteers at, and if you live in the area and would like to know the corner, shoot me an email at avondalelscrimeblotter@gmail.com. Gangbangers Yelling @ George And Avers

Good morning, everyone, it's 8:42am. It's a mostly sunny day with temps in the upper 40s and today will be partly cloudy with temps around 60. Spring has truly arrived in Chitown :). Anyway, I apologize for my lack of posts this week. I've had a real busy and stressful week, and once again, over the last couple of days, I didn't really feel like myself. But I feel better now. Today, I'll be covering 25 until about 10am, then I'll come back with 25 at 9:45pm this evening. I've got running around to do today, so I can't really blog all that much. I'm going to really try my best to blog better tomorrow and into this new week. Stay tuned for two posts going up sometime today or tomorrow, one from yesterday and the other one from Monday. I monitored 14 on Monday, but didn't get to do the whole day like I wanted to, so I'll be covering it again probably sometime this week, hopefully. Homicide At Bloomingdale and Francisco Last Friday, Possibly Gang-Related

Hello, everyone. I apologize for firstly reporting this following information so late. I received the email a few days ago, but my time management schedule has been horrible this week. But I will get straight to the news here and report to all of you that we've had our first murder in Logan Square for 2013.

It occurred last Friday, the 29th of March (on Good Friday, to be exact) near Bloomingdale on Francisco at 8pm. A 22 year old man, who lives on the 1700 block of Francisco, according to the email I received on this from the CAPS Beat 1421 Facilitator, was walking with his stepfather down the street when a car consisting of three men pulled up and asked the two for directions. Then they opened fire. The younger man, our homicide victim, was instantly killed while the older man was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in serious condition.

This shooting is possibly gang related, according to 14th District CAPS Sgt. Reyes, as there was a shooting a few nights prior to this one at Albany and Bloomingdale. This indicates increased activity and possible retaliation.

If anyone has insights or information, please don't hesitate to reach out to me here, my email address or the Facebook page. As a reminder, comments will be highly moderated as well.
