Recent Muggings @ The Logan Sq. Blue Line

Hi, everyone. I received this comment from a poster who was nice enough to leave this valuable information for all of us in the community regarding recent incidents of robbery around the Logan Square "L" stop on CTA's Blue Line:

"Hi Timmy-
I really appreciate the news coverage you provide for our neighborhood. Since a lot of neighbors read your blog, could you let them know about the recent string of muggings that are occurring near the Logan BL station?

The pattern is that a car pulls into an alley ahead of a (female) pedestrian. Two or three guys get out and loiter ahead of the victim until she catches up. One pulls a knife; if the victim resists, she gets punched or knocked down. There's been at least 4 attacks with the similar descriptions. One victim described the perps as clean-cut Hispanic males. No saying whether the crimes are all by the same crew, but it's likely.

There are two threads in the LS neighborhood group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LoganSquare/message/27731

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LoganSquare/message/27703"

Update: This is new information I received about these robberies: "...Two of the victims said that the car was a white sedan in good condition, with a higher back end--probably a sports model of some sort. But, not a particularly flashy type of car. One victim said that the men were so clean cut that she was momentarily disbelieving that it was a robbery...An earlier mugging took place near Milwaukee and Christiana, and the woman there said the car followed her briefly and just pulled to the curb before the perps jumped out and confronted her,".

Of course, if you have any comments, you're invited to leave them. But know this. Comments must be relevant to this topic, and I will certainly not allow any non-sense comments or personal attacks. I believe that we as a community should be able to discuss things without it getting stupid or personal. Thank you.

This is the first I've heard of this. It's terrible. Any idea what time these have been happening? Or what the car looks like? Anything to help stay safe...

Thanks, Timmy. I'm the OP. Two of the victims are friends of mine, and I'm upset that there hasn't been some sort of crime alert put out by the police or the alderman. I was told there's only one car patrolling 1411-13 in the evening, so it's up to us citizens to catch these guys.

With the way the economy has become along with the quality of police service today, shouldn't there be a change in city workers pensions?

Anonymous 9:33, unfortunately, I don't have that information. But I agree, it's terrible.

To the poster, no problem. There should really be an alert put out by the CPD and/or alderman, but as we all know, 14th District cops don't care, and if I'm not mistaken, that area is Colon's Ward, and he probably doesn't care either. And that's horrible that there's only one car patrolling those three Beats.

Anonymous 11:08, maybe.

Muggings? Only sheep get jumped. Learn to defend ones self. So many people today are just scared of everything. Stand up and fight.

Thanks for posting this information. I also had no idea this was happening but I'm glad you alerted us. And why only one car on patrol ? I know - budget cuts. God forbid the next victim is seriously injured.

I'm the OP, and am responding to Anon Jan 20 9:33:
This is presuming that the muggings are by the same group of people; we don't know if they are.

Two of the victims said that the car was a white sedan in good condition, with a higher back end--probably a sports model of some sort. But, not a particularly flashy type of car. One victim said that the men were so clean cut that she was momentarily disbelieving that it was a robbery.

An earlier mugging took place near Milwaukee and Christiana, and the woman there said the car followed her briefly and just pulled to the curb before the perps jumped out and confronted her.

Perps? Sounds like you watch too many crime shows. They're not called perps in Chicago.

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

Sgt. Benderski, seriously? Does that really matter?

Luke, people have a right to walk through their neighborhood without getting jumped on. And if you defend yourself, you get locked up too. Illinois law doesn't believe in self-defense. It's better just calling the cops when something like this happens. That's what they're for.

No problem, anonymous 11:15. And I agree, just wait until someone gets seriously get injured.

Poster, thanks for that additional information. I'm going to add that to this post.

And thats why people today get beat up. Cause you won't stand up. What judge will convict you? In fact if you hit a cop it won't even be a felony like the state law says. The states attn. won't approve the charge.

"They're not called perps in Chicago."

Yeah, in Chicago they're called "cold cases," aren't they officer?

AvondaleLoganSquareCrimeBlotter said...

Luke, I've heard of a few (and far in between) convicting people for self-defense.

Got mugged at gunpoint last night (10:30) @ Altgeld/Sawyer. Didn't see a car. Watch it out there and stick to major/well lit streets.
@Luke: a sole individual standing up to an armed group is the height of stupidity. While I'm always looking to flex my mad jeet kun do skills and hulkesque muscles I tend not to want to force a mugging situation into a shooting over nine bucks.

Sorry to hear that, anonymous 11:12. I'll mention that on the blog. And I agree, standing by yourself to a group of people is stupid, because it almost always leads up to a shooting.
