Gangbang Call On Avers

Good morning, everyone, it's 10:52am. I'm starting to feel a lot better. I have still a bit of a ways to go before I'm 100 percent again, but my health is better than it has been in a few days. Anyway, it's REALLY hot out. My God, it's like an oven out there. It's almost 100 degrees. This will lead up to storms, so that should make the bad guys go in. Here's crime for today.

12:28pm - Some call at 24X5 N Avers regarding a gangbanger. Sounded kind of like an assault.

2:36pm - Some call in the coverage area. Wasn't a major call or gang related, but still...

2:59pm - Municipal ordinance violation. Kelvyn Park. People selling ice cream.

3:23pm - Landlord/tenant dispute. 3018 N Hamlin.

3:40pm - 1) Open hydrant. George and Hamlin. Kids are playing in it. 2) Disturbance. 3636 W Oakdale. Elderly man screaming.

5:18pm - They're calling back on the 3:23pm job.

5:42pm - Two reports for a open hydrant at George and Ridgeway. First, I got a comment about it, then on the radio, Beat car 2523 reported it.

5:52pm - Third report for a open hydrant at George and Ridgeway. The hydrant at Oakdale and Ridgeway is also open. Ridgeway from George to Oakdale is completely flooded. This is per Beat 2584.

6:29pm - I have to go eat. I'll be back soon.

6:38pm - I'm back.

7:08pm - Battery in progress. George and Ridgeway. Male and female pushing each other.

8:32pm - Assault. Barry and Karlov. Gangbangers threatened someone.

8:53pm - 1) Loud music disturbance. 3101 N Haussen. 2) Parker. Somewhere in the coverage area.

9:08pm - Person w/ a knife. Somewhere on Milwaukee.

10:43pm - Fire. Fullerton and Kostner. Car.

12:04am - I'm gone for the night. Be back tomorrow. Good night.

There is an open hydrant on George and Ridgeway and they just opened another one on Oakdale and Ridgeway. Is it official now? Can we say that this is now the ghetto. The police and especially the alderman obviously dont give a shit anymore.

BTW there have been over 8 calls on that fire hydrant, is 8 enough or should it be more like 50. I wonder what would happen if one of those buildings in the middle of the 2900 block of ridgeway would catch fire during this. Would we have enough water to put it out?

I'll say this is the ghetto. I've been saying that for a while. After all, this is the worst neighborhood on this side of town.

I agree that the alderman doesn't care. Most definitely. But I disagree, to a point, about the police not caring, because the police can't do anything about a open hydrant. At best, they can tell the people in it to get out of the street and stop playing in it. They also can only report open hydrants to the Water department.

Honestly this is EXACTLY what bucktown used to be like in the early eighties. There is hope but some people have to get out of here, like gangbangers, drunks, and the current aldermen for this neighborhood. I have been here for 25 years and remember it taking a huge dive around 15 years ago but the community reacted and changes were made. Now the politicians here take our vote for granted and would love to see the Polish and Hispanic residents as divided as possible so nobody gives a shit and everyone eventually moves out. Its time to unite and do something.

@ 5:46 get a clue. there is plenty water. open hydrants only flood streets and lower water pressure a lil bit. Although I don't agree with playing in open hydrants, there's probably 100 open city wide right now and there's only so much the city can do in a few hours. Would you rather the fire departments run around chasing open hydrants or fighting fires? Forget about streets and san getting to the hydrants until tomorrow morning where it's time and a half weekend pay.

wow this is the ghetto because of open hydrants?!?! Thats dumb its freaking 100 degrees out here. Every neighborhood in the city has some open even the ones the yuppies live in!

Rigth I was going to say who cares about open hydrants everyone does it in the summer I did It when I was little. Why do people call the police I know back in the day people would call the police and usually the police didnt responce because they said It was a waste of time, yeah that makes a place ghetto by opening hydrants. I bet the people that are saying its ghetto is those damn transplant kids no one wants around here.

Anonymous 8:24, I can't speak for 5:17, but I say this is the ghetto because of all the gang problems we have in this area. It's real bad around here because of them. They don't let us do anything without harassing us. And, something else for you. It's UNSAFE! Those kids can really get hurt. If you live in this area, you would know that cars speed down the street at about 40-45 miles an hour. Besides, there's OTHER ways to keep cool. They can play with a water hose, water guns, go to the pool. There's all kind of things they can do.

LS, people have a right to care, when the streets start getting flooded and when there are people in the middle of the street. Personally, I just look out for their safety. We all know it's hot, but like I said, there ARE other ways to keep cool. And, on another personal, I don't say it's only ghetto around here because of the hydrants. It's also ghetto because of these little punks with their "it's so cool to be ghetto!" attitude. That applies to mostly gangbangers, but it can also apply to these little teeny boppers walking around here, acting like they want to fight or mess with someone when nobody's even done anything to them. I'm sick of it, mainly because I've been around it all my life and because there was a time when I used to act like that. I'll just say it ain't cool. And something else. If we didn't want other races here, do you think we'd be yelling at our alderman to get them out of here? I welcome them, but they shouldn't join gangs or get this little ghetto rap attitude either. They're just wasting their life on that BS.

On a different topic, do you know of a way to follow up about something you report here? I think I heard the shots fired yesterday evening and I would like to know what happened, but I don't know how to get this information unless it is a really bad crime that gets reported.

Those kids can play in a sprinkler in the parkway, front yard, or back yard. I'm a Chicagoan, and we did that when I was a kid. Open hydrants ARE a danger to the ENTIRE community. Some of my good friends are fireman, and they agree that open hydrants lower water pressure significantly...and I don't need to know any firefighters to understand basic physics- "leaks" drop pressure. Plug up the damn fire hydrants, and break out the sprinklers....it's cheaper than a/c, and it's more safe than playing in the street.

I want to expand on my earlier comment about playing in the sprinkler...Letting the kids share a sprinkler might actually give the adults on the block a chance to get to know each other. If neighbors get to know each other, block clubs and other neighborhood worthy organizations might come together more quickly.

Anonymous 4am, the only way I can follow-up on something is if the person who reports the incident tells me what happened after the fact. You can also ask the police. Where was this at? If you'd like, you can email me at weatherboy58@hotmail.com about it.

Anonymous 7:40, I agree completely.

Anonymous 7:46, I also agree with you.
