Beat 1411 CAPS Meeting This Evening (3-2-11)

Good evening, everyone. I attended 1411's CAPS meeting tonight. This was my first and, so far, only visit to that meeting. There were old issues, according to a list I obtained from the meeting, but they were not talked about, so here's the new problems:

* There has been a lot of gang activity lately at the corner of Campbell and George. It's a gang conflict area, with gang members from 25 and other parts of 14 coming by, shooting.
* 2900 block of N. Fairfield - Problem with a residence who is causing trouble and has been for 8 years. Apparently, there's loitering, shootings and etc.
* Talman and Diversey - Sketchy-looking people constantly going in and out of the ground floor apartment.
* 2800 block of W. Barry - Parking is a really, really big problem by the UNO Charter school over there. Parents are included by ignoring the signs. The CAPS Sgt., the Commander of 14 (Linda Flores), the CAPS Organizer and the school will have a meeting about it.

Other observations:
> I was rather impressed with the turn-out at this meeting. There were about 15 residents in attendance at this meeting, along with the 14th District Commander Linda Flores, the CAPS Sgt., the CAPS Community Organizer, and two officers working Beat 1411 on Afternoons.
> Commander Flores is quite defensive when it comes to citizens questioning 14. She gets kind of loud when responding to people inquiring about problems, calls, etc. I actually felt uncomfortable with her attitude.
> The most crimes were motor vehicle theft (15 reported incidents), domestic battery (11 reported incidents), and theft (11 reported incidents).

For this Beat meeting post, I ask for those residents who read the blog but don't come to the meetings (because they don't want to), please, go!

Next meeting: May 4, 2010 at Resurrection Church [basement] (3045 N. Fransisco) at 6:30PM.

Thank you,
Timmy

You realize that most cops HATE C.A.P.S, right? Her attitude doesn't surprise me.

I don't understand why, either. To me, CAPS (the meetings at least) helps the street officers to be informed about crime and disorder on their Beat. And gives the officers a chance to meet the citizens who in involved with the community on their Beat. So it's kind of insulting that some officers don't take CAPS meetings seriously. Sure, there's some stupid citizens at the meetings sometimes (which wasn't the case last night), but we all know there are some stupid cops, too (believe me, I've dealt with them), so the cops shouldn't have the image of all of us being stupid.

As for Linda Flores, her attitude was simply unprofessional, if you ask me. It was not appropriate at a meeting like this.

Those cops just don't like having to answer to people at the beat meetings. They don't like to be put on the spot. It just shows how most are just in it for the money, not for service to the community. Go read their silly Second city cop blog. They whine about everything like spoiled brats.

any mention of the shooting near Belmont and Sacramento or is that beat 1412?

Thanks for attending and summarizing this meeting. I had to work and couldn't make it. 1411 has a few rather organized neighbors in it and is mostly a great place to be! There are some issues but I've been impressed with the community involvement here.

That's my beat, and I completely forgot about it last night! I looked out the window about 7:15 and I saw the police cars and realized it was too late! I'm glad you went and reported about it. I was hoping to meet you!

You had written about the parking around the school (absolutely ridiculous)! I have called almost every Sunday for the past 2 years and have complained for the last 4. This is NOT going to change. Any suggestions on how to clear it up?

Also, Commander Flores is not quite appropriate when it comes to things like that. She can't keep taking offense, she should do things about it. Is there anything that can be done about that?

Flores needs to take a class in how to professionally act in a social forum. Knowing how she acted last night was like watching a high school child run through a tantrum. Extremely unprofessional. Her job is to work for the better of the 14th district. If law abiding residents are telling her that crime issues are taking place or that others are breaking the law, she needs to listen to them and not act like she did and not immediately disregard the complaints. Again, she was extremely unprofessional and I really can't stress how unbelievable it was. If a manager did that in a private sector place of business they would be fired. Personally, I think we should be allowed to videotape these CAPS meetings. If crap like this goes on again, we just send it to NBC 5 Chicago or CBS 2 Chicago. Expose the issue to the City of Chicago.

bobbo, it's funny you should mention that because Sgt. Weiglein, the CAPS Sergeant in 25, doesn't really have a problem answering to the public. Even if something is said he doesn't agree with or doesn't like, he keeps it professional and doesn't try to make the citizen look bad or sound stupid like Flores did last night. Hell, even Sgt. Velgara, 14's CAPS Sergeant, and 1411's two Beat cops, were more professional than her. And she's the Commander.

Anonymous 6:59, no mention of it. This shooting was on 1411's Beat, too.

Anonymous 9:35, not a problem. As far as the Beat goes, I had the same impression. That meeting had a good amount of people there who are willing to be involved with the community. It was better than the Beat meeting I went to last month for Beat 1432. And it did seem somewhat safe.

Corgador, sorry about you not being able to make it and not meeting me. That would've been nice if we met. But maybe we can. You see, 1411's meeting was one of the better ones I've been to in the recent months, and I may come back either later this year or next year for another meeting, depending on if I get my block club back up and running and what days our meetings will be on. As far as the parking situation, I'm not sure what else can be done besides aggressively writing tickets and having a meeting regarding it. And as far as Flores' attitude, and this goes to all residents in 14, if she keeps up with it or gets worse, I would consider reporting her. Yes, CPD has a tough job, we all get that (well, those who care anyway), but there's no room for her attitude. I'm glad I live in 25 and don't have to deal with it like those of you in 14. I sincerely feel sorry for all of you.

Roadwolf, just curious, but were you at the meeting last night? If so, I wish I could've stayed and introduced myself to you. But, you know, I absolutely agree with you. I felt like I was at school all over again, despite having been gone for 5 hours at that point, watching her act like she did. I actually wanted to say something about it, but I didn't because I wasn't about to get into it with four cops who were armed, one sitting right next to me.
