Beat 2523 meeting on Wednesday

Good evening, everyone. I'd like to tell you all, and because I've had popular demand :), about 2523's Beat meeting that took place on Wednesday (9-23-09).

When I walked in with my mom, it was just us. We were early. So we just sat in the lobby of the Copercius (not sure how's it spelled) Center, 3160 North Milwaukee. About 10 minutes later, a couple of more residents arrived. Then the Beat officers walked in with the Beat facilatior (I'm sure some of you may know who she is, if you live on Beat 2523). Then followed in was Sergeant Weigelin, one of my favorites from 25. Officer Flores came in with him. She's my favorite police officer out of 25. She's kind and she really seems to enjoy her job.

Anyway, the Beat meeting started. We all introduced ourselves. Then here was when it got interesting.

The first talked about issue from last month was from 2911 North Springfield, where apparently there were gangbangers hanging out at night, making noise and causing a disturbance. Sergeant Weigelin told us the officers looked into it, and shut it down.

Then discussed was the issue of people feeding the homeless and drunks along Milwaukee Avenue, particulary at Davlin Court. The Medical Center at that corner was especially doing it. Also along Milwaukee were the lovelys throwing trash around. This really bothered a couple of residents.

Third on the agenda was the liquoir stores on Milwaukee. Apparently, they were violating their lisences or something by just handing out bottles of liquior on the street. I'm not too sure. It was something like that. There were also a couple of other issues along Milwaukee. To combat all of this, the police did a mission along Milwaukee about two or three weeks ago (I remember hearing this over the scanner). They went into zero tolerance mode. 16 arrests were made from the mission. The intoxicated people were taken to those garden places on Madison.

The last issue regarding crime were prostitutes up and down Pulaski, looking for customers. They even came up to one of our residents who attended the Beat meeting.

The non-crime issue we had was the Beat meeting location being moved. Officers want to move it to St. Joesph's Village Of Chicago, 4021 West Belmont. Residents complained of parking issues there. So did one officer. They also talked about changing the Beat meeting time for it to start a little earlier (at 6 or 6:30). They think more people will show up if they do that.

Now, moving on to the new problems:
  • 3733 West George - There are all sorts of craziness happening at this location. Mostly males, allegedy Hispanic, one who appears to be a gang member, are going by 3 window of the ground floor. There are also women involved. They were seen putting their hands through the windows then getting in cars. They drive towards Hamlin on George usually. This occurrs between 12-3pm.
  • There has been reports of a car hitting other cars throughout the Beat, that also appears to be getting into them and stealing things.
  • 4000 block of West George - Illegal parking on the south side of the street. There are 3 feet from the curb. The resident reporting this has called once, but he got a bad response from the officer assigned on second watch and from OEMC (911 center).
  • 3084 North Davlin Court - People, particulary males, have been sitting in cars for long periods of time, drinking. They double park all over the block. The resident complaining reported that a male in a red car was dragging a female and beating on her on the 23rd. Before he could get a plate or anything, the car took off. The resident noticed this when he heard the female screaming outside.
  • 3100 block of North Monticello - There has been some guys doing something in the west alley. They have appeared to be doing exchanges, possibly involving narcotics.
  • 2856 North Hamlin - There were people urinating, but within 3 days before the Beat meeting, the back garage where this was occurring was boarded up.
  • Belmont and Milwaukee - All the Shell gas station, resident after resident reported a regular group in upwards of 30 to 40 people gathering there, sometimes blocking the pumps. One resident says one bum bumped his car, which scared the daylights out of his daughters, who are small children. A bum also tried to rob the resident. He was quoted/unquoted as saying "hey, give me all your money," repeatedly.

So, yes, I attended my Beat. It was good and interesting. So interesting that I'm going back in October. I really enjoyed this meeting.

Other observations:
On this Beat, there were 329 calls for service. We've had 116 reported crimes with 61 arrests. Most of the crime seems to be on the 3900 block of West Diversey. Most of the crime appears to take place on Sundays. The highest reported crime was Theft. Most crimes were reported in the 8pm, 11am and 10pm hours.

A Quiet Friday (so far)

Good morning, everyone, it's 12:00am. No school today for me, or most other kids. Anyway, today we'll have some rain showers this afternoon with more temps in the 70s. Also, I probably will be gone from about 4-9pm today, as I might go down to the 911 center on a tour with other kids who live in the 25th district. We're being taken by bus. Our escorts/helpers/etc. will be none other than Chicago's finest theirselves, the men and women in blue. This thing goes from 5:30-8pm. Lastly, if anyone wants to know what happened at Beat 2523's meeting on Wednesday, please let me know. So, here's crime for today.

11:33pm - I'm FINALLY back. I got caught up writing another post and doing other stuff. Anyway, my trip to the 911 center was great. I met the male dispatcher named George who works 3rd watch on Zone 12. I guess he's pretty nice. Can't say that from the comments he's made in the past about my calls, though.

11:34pm - There was something on 2523's Beat.

11:50pm - 10-1. 2705 N Narraganset. Off duty PO getting threatened.

My class is going on it's first field trip of the year, but I'm not attending, because my classes come first. Anyway, I just read an article, which was kind of written not so good, about a man found bound and gagged in an alley on the 18th in the 2600 block of N Whipple. That's crazy. Also, I'm only going to be here for this morning. I'm attending a Beat meeting tonight, and due to homework, I decided just not to blog this afternoon, so here's crime for this morning before I go.

Shooting On Palmer Wednesday Night

Good evening, everyone, it's 9:30pm. Apparently, on Wednesday night, there was a shooting within the 3700 block of West Palmer. Here's what I got.

Anonymous said...
"Didn't see this one on your blog, but there was a shooting on Palmer St last night, too.

Around 11pm, we heard 5 or 6 shots including one that sounded like it hit a street sign or a mailbox. Then shouting. We called 911 at that time, but by the time police arrived on scene (like a minute later) the shooting victim had been taken from the scene in a friend's car. As far as I could see, no arrests were made,".

There is no further information. Of course, another shooting. What more can I say?

Man Exposing Himself On North Avenue

Good morning, everyone, it's 6:14am. Today is supposed to be in the mid 70s with more sunshine. Anyway, I woke up rather late this morning, at 5:30 (I'm supposed to be up at 5:00) but I just rushed a couple of things and now am on time. Also, since I haven't gotten any comments yet regarding last night or haven't heard from any sources about anything major occurring last night, I'm just going to assume that only traffic was screwed up and that everything else went just fine. That's good to know if true. So, here's crime before I go this morning and for this afternoon/evening.

6:33am - Sex offense. 3700 W North. Walking westbound is a male with a backpack exposing himself.

Shooting/Beating @ Diversey and Lawndale

Good morning, everyone. We've had some gunfire to erupt in W. Logan Square late last night, around 11pm. Location of the incident is Diversey and Lawndale. I can personally confirm this. A good source of mine reports they heard arguing, then one gunshot went off. There was a quick pause before more than a dozen gunshots went off. People were heard running and screaming. My source didn't have to call 911, as calls instantly poured into the 911 center for Shots Fired. The information was relayed over Zone 12's radio within seconds.

I was awoken as sirens came screaming around the corner. I asked my mom what was going on and she said there were Shots Fired. So I stayed up to hear what was going on. Within seconds of police arriving, they reported that a male was shot in the back. I don't know how many times. But that's not all that happened.

A male was beaten, severely, with a bat. According to officers over the radio, he was hit in the face. He was bleeding (obviously).

The shooting vitcim is 17 years of age, and the bat vitcim is 27 years old. Scanner reports had the shooting vitcim taken to the hospital at about 19th and Califorina (not sure how to spell it's name), but a news report says they were taken to Illinois Masonic.

From what I've been gathering, this is all related to the Mexican parade thing that came down Diversey last night at the time. Apparently, an argument may have ensued which resulted in a group of males attacking the vitcims. It's reported that the group fled towards Central Park. Though the scanner claims a little different.

Scanner reports had three males, one with braids in his hair, all in their 20s, standing in front of 2727 North Monticello. The 911 caller claimed that these males were involved. Then someone on the 3600 block of West Diversey spoke to police to give more information.

The crime scene was rather large. Beat 2599 was saying it was in the middle of the street, which screwed up traffic big time. #76 Diversey CTA buses had to be rerouted.

I'm impressed with all of the good people who took the time to call 911 last night. More than a dozen calls came in, which is impressive. I'm also proud of the person who spoke to police last night. I would've went over to the scene, but police were saying there was a rowdy group present (no fights broke out afterwards, however).

I can't say this is gang related, or not, so I won't make offical opinions. Due to all of the people on the street last night, you never know what happened. All I, and probably some of you, can hope for is that no retailation shootings occurr. Or no big brawls. But that might happen, since there will probably be yet another celebration tonight.

7:48pm - The 7:36pm offenders are Latin Kings. They did some serious damage to the vitcim's car with a fire hydrant cap lock. They also tried to stab the passenger, shouting "King Love!".

7:49pm - The Latin Kings from the 7:36pm job fled north into 17. 2599 thinks something's going to jump off north of Belmont tonight. I think so too.

8:01pm - Violation order of protection. 2106 N Pulaski. The husband has an order against.

8:02pm - Burglar report. 2926 N Hamlin.

8:15pm - The rowdy celebrations are spilling onto the Diversey corridor now (I hear it, but I haven't called 911 for anything). Here's what's coming off the scanner. Group of teens are getting rowdy. Location is 3645 and 3752 West Diversey.

8:24pm - The wagon's coming on over to Fullerton and Pulaski to check it out over there.

8:30pm - Alright, I'm off to get my beauty sleep. Good night, everyone. Let me know if anything occurrs tonight from the celebrations. Be safe.

And if you need to call 911 (for those west of Central Park), you're in bad luck because dispatch is just sending everything to 2540 who will code it out.
